Games with older kids outside

Today was our first day of Vacation Bible School! We planned for a few hours this morning and went to the church around 9:00. We started out with about thirty kids, but as the morning went on kids trickled in and we ended up with over fifty kids in total. It was slightly crazy and SO loud! We started out with singing a bunch of songs and getting the kids up and dancing.

We had a skit acting out Paul’s trials as a Christian and introduced the theme/saying for the day: “God’s word is comforting.” Then we broke up into two groups, 4-8 year olds and 9-12 year olds. The 4-8 year olds were WILD! They had an extremely short attention span, to say the least. The hit of the day was Play-Dough, they would’ve played with it all day if we had let them!

Games such as Duck Duck Goose and Red Light Green Light were also extremely popular, and they loved when we drew with sidewalk chalk and when Mrs. Paz read them stories. We had to do lots of different activities to keep them engaged. Even though they exhausted me, the kids were absolutely adorable and so affectionate. The older kids did activites such as relays and fun games relating to the lesson. Someone from that group should blog on their experience, because I don’t really know what they did considering I worked with the little kids all day. We gave them all a snack (“Chipwrecked,” referencing the shipwreck Paul experienced) and let them watch a video for a while. At the end of the day we gathered together as a big group and sang some more songs before we wrapped up for the day. The kids seemed like they had a fantastic time and I heard a lot of them say that they were coming back tomorrow. There were so many new kids there who didn’t go to that church normally, which was great. Maybe now those kids can bring their families to church.

We’re all pretty exhausted from our hectic morning, so most people are napping right now. I think we’re going to try to upload some pictures later, so check back for that!
